Eucalyptus’ Cloud Platform Hits First Update

The new widgetry features multi-cluster support and enhanced concurrency management to improve scaling so users can seamlessly overlay their Eucalyptus cloud on top of virtually any existing IT infrastructure, regardless of size or configuration. Eucalyptus is meant for implementing an on-premise cloud using an organization’s own IT infrastructure. It supports the same APIs as public clouds, and with the release of version 1.6.1, claims to be the only on-premise cloud platform that’s fully compatible with the Amazon AWS public cloud infrastructure.

Zend Cozies Up to Oracle

Zend Technology, Microsoft’s little open source PHP friend, says it’s making its Zend application server, designed for running and managing business-critical PHP applications in production, available to Oracle’s enterprise customers through Oracle’s Unbreakable Linux Network. It includes out-of-the-box enterprise-grade connectivity to Oracle Database. PHP is said to run 35% of the web. According Zend CEO Andi Gutmans, “Together, we are now delivering an enterprise-grade PHP stack from top to bottom supporting the development, deployment, and management of business-critical PHP applications on Oracle. This full stack will also ease deployment in virtual environments using Oracle VM.”

The Birth of Virtualization – A Sure Bar Bet Winner

I’m willing to make this little bet with you: Most people of a certain age are more than willing to bet folding green that IBM ‘invented’ virtualization. Gen-any-letters will bet VMware with confidence. You will win either way.
Today’s burgeoning virtualization market is a different story. And in that story, VMware is the dad.

The SMS message was desperate. AJ sent the plea “If I have to see one more picture of a cloud in a PPT I might lose it…” After two days of presentations at the Cloud Computing Conference and Expo, where companies tried to bring the audience up to an Intro to Clouds 101 level, some attendees were grasping for new ideas, new information, new reasons why companies should release their IT models currently based on strict FUD-Factor (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) compliance, to the new generation of cloud computing.

Will Virtualization Die in SharePoint 2010 Development?

So what does this mean? For some reason, Microsoft has not given us desktop virtualization software that can run 64 bit guest (even though Hyper-V can). So I think this left Microsoft a choice. Get 64 bit guests added to Windows Virtual PC, recommend developers use a non Microsoft virtualization technology, or get SharePoint working on Windows 7 and Vista. Now, adding 64 bit support I am sure is quite an undertaking and they definitely don’t want to recommend a competitor’s product. This means that making SharePoint work directly on the developer’s machine the obvious choice. After all it runs on top of IIS and IIS is pretty similar between Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Vista (yes, I do know there are differences).

The Problem with SLA Monitoring in Virtualized Environments

Because virtual machines work by time-sharing host physical hardware, a virtual machine cannot exactly duplicate the timing behaviour of a physical machine. This leads to the timekeeping problems explained in the VMWare White Paper about Timekeeping in Virtual Machines that results in inaccurate time measurements within the virtual machine. This affects ALL performance metrics that rely on the operating system clock time to keep track of time which includes system counters like CPU or I/O Utilization. Performance Management solutions therefore run into the problem that the monitored metrics are inaccurate and can lead to incorrect enforcement of SLAs or wrong assumptions about application performance.

WILS: Three Ways To Better Utilize Resources In Any Data Center

Cloud computing is, at its core, about using resources in the most operational and financially efficient manner possible. It’s about spreading resources around and sharing them to achieve greater scalability with fewer investments in hardware and software. But what if you aren’t moving to cloud? Or virtualization? Or perhaps you are, but the benefits won’t be really seen until you actually get enough resources shared across your organization. Isn’t there any other way to better utilize the resources you have now to improve the bottom line?

Yes, yes, there is. And the best part is that these methods will increase the efficiency of resource utilization in any architectural model.

“Server” offload technologies are applicable to any server – physical or virtual The efficiencies gained in server resource utilization and increase in VM densities are not peculiar to a cloud environment. In fact, the offload capabilities of an application delivery controller (SSL, TCP session management, compression, caching) can benefit any “server” in any environment. Because the offload capabilities are applied at the transport protocol and application protocol layers, these benefits are universal to web and application servers whether residing in virtual machines or on physical hardware, in the cloud or in a traditional data center.

Proactive security measures Whether it’s stopping common web application attacks or SPAM from entering the network, proactive security measures can make more efficient use of resources available by preventing them from spending time on “bad” or “illegitimate” traffic. Stopping attacks and SPAM and other malicious content at the perimeter of the data center prevents resources on the network, on the servers, and in the storage systems from being used to transport, process, and store what is nothing more than garbage. This improves the efficiency of the entire infrastructure and does not require a cloud model to achieve.

Automated Storage Tiering Automated storage tiering can automatically move less frequently accessed files to less expensive storage arrays while moving more frequently accessed files to faster, more expensive storage. Automating such processes mean administrators need not manually determine which file goes where, or optimize storage based on performance and cost by pulling out a slide ruler and calculating costs per megabyte. The system automatically determines how to best utilize the storage based on cost and performance and acts on behalf of the storage administrator, like a digital storage maid service that never needs to be reminded to sweep the floor.

WILS: Write It Like Seth. Seth Godin always gets his point across with brevity and wit. WILS is an ATTEMPT TO BE concise about application delivery TOPICS AND just get straight to the point. NO DILLY DALLYING AROUND.

<img height="18" alt="Follow me on Twitter" src="http://devcentral.f5.com/weblogs/images/devcentral_f5_com/weblogs/macvittie/125/o_twitt-twoo-icon.png"
How To Select Your Data Center

The data center industry continues to evolve with mergers, acquisitions, and a healthy crop of emerging companies. New data center products and services are hitting the street, an aggressive debate on the model of selling space vs. power, and alternatives to physical data center space in the cloud are giving us a confusing maze of alternatives to meet our outsourcing needs.

Virtualization 101

With Virtualization becoming intertwined with cloud computing it is worth taking a step back and looking once again what virtualisation is, and is not. Virtualization and Emulation are often compared, but there are a set of important differences. Emulation provides the functionality of a target processor completely in software. The main advantage being that you can emulate one type of processor on any other type of processor. Unfortunately it tends to be slow. Virtualization however involves taking a physical processor and partitioning it into multiple contexts. All of which take turns running directly on the processor itself. Because of this, Virtualization in faster than emulation.

Personal Branding Book Review by Marshall Goldsmith

I had the privilege of serving on the Board of the Peter Drucker Foundation (now the Leader to Leader Institute) for ten years. Peter was a pioneer in understanding the impact of knowledge workers in the new economy. He simply defined knowledge workers as ‘people who know more about what they are doing than their boss does’. In a world where knowledge workers are the key to value in most corporations, personal brand management becomes critically important.

How Cloud Computing *Improves* Security

We are being bombarded with countless articles and presentations talking about the security risks in cloud computing and how organizations need to be concerned about security as they consider a move to the cloud. The truth is that organizations DO need to be concerned about security, and it’s exactly that increased concern that is driving security to a whole new level as enterprises move to the cloud. Scott Sanchez will be discussing the key areas where you can expect to see improved security and reduced risk after a successful migration to cloud computing, as well as some of the major issues to look out for.

You Have a Virtualized Environment, Now What Do You Do?

While virtualization has certainly become part of a common first step to reduce Capex and increase agility, it isn’t the final destination of a complete data center transformation. As we are aware, virtualization can also create many challenges such as virtual machine sprawl, additional storage capacity, increased systems management requirements, new IT management processes, and specialized technical skills. Jason Noel will go on further to discuss how these challenges will be even more acute as virtualization continues to progress into other areas such as desktops, storage and the network. Virtualization is undoubtedly a foundational technology to building the cloud, but it takes a whole lot more to exploit the potential benefits than just virtualization. Virtual workloads will need to be easily and securely moved between in-house systems and external cloud-based systems.

Virtualization changes the game of IT: now IT can deliver the full stack of PC software, including the operating system, to be run on say an employee's PC running Windows or Mac OS. According to Monica Lam, virtualization is an enabler and not a management tool per se.

Managing Sprawl and Self-Service for Virtual Machines

With virtualization, server requests can be processed in minutes instead of weeks or months. But rapid provisioning of virtual servers can result in sprawl and other challenges. How do you ensure governance and prevent sprawl, while maintaining the efficiency and agility benefits of virtualization? In this session, Scott Hammond will explain how to use a Service Catalog of standard options to enable self-service requests while enforcing pre-approved VM images, stop dates, and policy controls.

Cloud Management: What You Don't Know Can Hurt You

Cloud computing providers are growing fast as IT organizations purchase more services for on-demand infrastructure resources. However, immature management tools and processes are driving up business and security risks. At the Cloud Computing Conference & Expo, Stephen Elliot will discuss why he believes that IT organizations must feel confident in cloud provider capabilities for real time resource provisioning, performance management, change detection, configuration management, and security as they assume Service Level Agreements and adopt cloud services.

What’s new in Services on Server in SP2010

Curious to know what the Services on Server page looks like now? Well, then this is the post for you. Instead of just having the 6 or so services that you had in MOSS 2007, there are many more services listed on the Services on Server page. Here is what your list might look like (pending changes of course). Since the move to Service Applications, you will probably find yourself concentrating on this page as much, but it’s still there.

Access Database Service

Application Registry Service

Business Data Connectivity

Central Administration

Document Conversion Launcher Service

Document Conversion Load Balancing Service

Excel Calculation Services

Lotus Notes Connector

Managed Metadata Web Service

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Incoming E-mail

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Subscription Settings Service

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation User Code Service

PerformancePoint Service

PowerPoint Service

Search Query and Site Settings Service

Secure Store Service

SharePoint Foundation Search

SharePoint Server Search

User Profile Service

User Profile Synchronization Service

Visio Graphics Service

Web Analytics Data Processing Service

Web Analytics Web Service

Word Automation Services

Word Viewing Service

As you get more familiar with the concept of Service Applications, you will notice that many of the items on this list are service applications.

Clouds for the Enterprise Security & Performance

The intent of the blogs is to provide the thought leadership for readers seeking to create a sound strategy for exploiting cloud computing for the enterprise. The other lesson we learned is the transfer and access of highly confidential data in a shared environment/multitenant cloud model requires advanced encryption in a performance-oriented capability. Unisys is a firm we collaborate with that provides software technology and integration expertise that scrambles data packets being transferred or in motion and scrambles associated data in a multitenant stored environment with advanced encryption and compression to ensure both performance and security.

CA Reports Second Quarter Fiscal Year 2010 Results

*Non-GAAP income and earnings per share are non-GAAP financial measures, as noted in the discussion of non-GAAP results below. A reconciliation of non-GAAP financial measures to their comparable GAAP financial measures is included in the tables following this news release.

"Our first half performance leaves CA well positioned for the second half of the year," said John Swainson, CA's chief executive officer. "We grew revenue on a constant currency basis, focused on operational efficiencies that drove bottom line results on both a GAAP and non-GAAP basis and generated cash flow from operations up 62 percent in constant currency and 40 percent as reported from the first half of fiscal year 2009."

"We are seeing some improvement in the economic climate, especially in North America, and a willingness by customers to discuss strategic projects that will help tightly align their IT and the management of their IT resources with business imperatives," he continued. "This trend plays to the strengths in CA's product portfolio and combined with our enterprise customer pipeline, significant renewal portfolio and continued focus on operational efficiencies, gives us confidence that we will have a strong second half."

HA: Doing More With Less

High availability for full server protection has never been more important. As virtualization and blade technologies continue to rapidly be adopted, IT infrastructures are becoming smaller and more efficient. Doing more with less has been a centralized theme for IT managers this past year but “less” doesn’t mean ignoring backup and recovery strategies. If anything high availability solutions are also being consolidated, easier to deploy and much more cost effective. Most everyone has seen the availability curve describing the cost of a low recovery point (RPO) or time objective (RTO) using some medium like tape can be low cost but not effective to achieve high availability for business critical applications. As the RTO and RPO window shrinks typically the cost increases to achieve rapid five 9 availability. This is no longer the case and if anything the paradigm is shifting and becoming the exact opposite because the cost of downtime or the length of time it takes to recover is more expensive than preventing it.

Why IBM’s Server Chief Got Busted

The United States government has accused Robert Moffat, IBM’s server chief, the guy who was negotiating to buy Sun, with betraying Sun’s financial position to Danielle Chiesi, an employee of New Castle Partners, a New York hedge fund, so she could trade on the insider information.

Moffat knew what Sun’s numbers were going to be because he was one of the nine IBMers doing due diligence at Sun this past January.
