Novell is up to rev 8.1 of PlateSpin Protect, which is supposed to protect and restore whole workloads from both physical servers and virtual machines in the data center and private cloud up to 50% faster than before, shrinking backup windows and reducing the time needed to restore systems after an outage.
Novell says it provides better RPO (Recovery Point Objective) and RTO (Recovery Time Objective) than tape at a fraction of the cost of traditional clustering or replication solutions.
It uses warm-standby virtual machines as both the backup media and recovery environment.
The replacement server can be a different model or brand and if the original server can be repaired, PlateSpin’s Server Sync technology is supposed to make the failback process faster by copying back only the changes that occurred after the failover, instead of the entire workload.
It’s supposed to be faster over slower high-latency WAN links, entailing lower bandwidth costs for the user.
There’s also file-level restore from protected workload images, reducing the restore time when only a few files or folders, not the whole workload, is needed.
And it now supports vSphere 4, Windows Server 2008 and Vista.
