VMware’s Fusion 3 Stumbles at the Gate

The problem is reportedly fixed now

Fusion 3, VMware's upgraded solution for running Windows and PC applications on a Mac, although Apple has its own Bootcamp widgetry, tried wending its way out the other day and hit a nasty snag at its upgrade portal. VMware says it was because of larger-than-expected demand and couldn't keep up. The problem is reportedly fixed now.

So, anyway, with the current lot of enhancements VMware has added like a built-in Migration Assistant for Windows, VMware claims it's more than twice as fast as other "switch to Mac" solutions.

It says users can move their entire PC - applications, files and settings - to their Mac with a Ethernet cable, a FireWire cable, or even wirelessly.

The widgetry now supports four-way SMP and loses the infamous Microsoft start menu and launches Windows apps from a "always-on" menu, even when VMware Fusion isn't running.

VMware says Fusion 3 leverages Mac OS X Snow Leopard's architecture with a new 64-bit core engine and native support for the 64-bit kernel to deliver better Windows-on-Mac performance.

It also claims it will be the first to enable the full Windows 7 experience, complete with Windows Aero and Flip 3D.

VMware says more than 10,000 private beta users have helped shape Fusion 3's features.

It will cost $79.99 starting November 4. Upgrades run $39.99 at vmware.com/go/buyfusion.
