Siegen, Germany. The storage specialist PoINT Software & Systems GmbH has released the new version 2.0 of PoINT Storage Manager. This software solution allows users to get increasing investments in storage systems under control as well as to save time and cost for the backup process.
The tiered storage concept of PoINT Storage Manager is available for Windows NTFS based hard disk systems and - with release of version 2.0 - also for NetApp FAS systems. This approach migrates not permanently used data policy based and transparent for users and applications from performance optimized first level to cost optimized second level storage. The innovative "Pass Through" implementation ensures that migrated data which are requested at the first level storage are directly delivered to the application from the second level storage. Thus, files must not be first stored in the first level storage as this is normally necessary with other products. The second level storage can consist of a combination of different storage technologies (e.g. SATA RAID and LTO tape or BD optical) to make use of their specific advantages and to offer safety by redundancy.
This approach of PoINT Storage Manager does not only reduce purchase costs for first level storage but it also optimizes the backup process. As migrated files do not need to be backed up additionally - they are already stored on redundantly configured second level storage - storage capacity for backup (e.g. by less required tapes) and time are saved. This way the user benefits twofold: All stored files remain directly accessible for applications and users via the first level storage while, at the same time, cost for first level storage and for backup is reduced.
PoINT Storage Manager 2.0 is a "software only" solution for Windows Server 2003/2008 and supports cluster configurations.
