Cloud Computing Buyers Council Comes into Being

There is now an Enterprise Cloud Buyers Council (ECBC) set up under the aegis of the TM Forum, a trade association, that's supposed to seek input from the largest "global cloud buyers" - a new category in the purchasing department - about what they need and ensure that any "impediments" - such as fear of vendor lock-in - are removed.

At least two enterprise buyers have joined - the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Deutsche Bank - and suppliers like Alcatel-Lucent, Amdocs, AT&T, BT, CA, Cisco, EMC, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Nokia Siemens Networks, Telecom Italia and Telstra have reportedly agreed to join. So have the Distributed management Task Force (DMTF) and the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF).

The counsel is supposed to set strategy and launch specific work programs.

Candidate work areas include common cloud services product definitions; cloud security issues; cloud-to-cloud interoperability, data portability and APIs; service provider benchmarking; buyer-demand forecasting; federated cloud stores; cloud SLA process management and cloud network performance and latency issues.

The organization will be hosting a web conference on December 16 that should offer more details.
