Virtualization Track at Cloud Expo
HP, a provider of Windows embedded thin client hardware, on Thursday announced plans to support Microsoft RemoteFX, a set of technologies designed to enhance the end user's computing experience over a remote connection. HP also introduced the availability of the HP Remote Desktop Client (RDC) add-on for its industry-leading, Windows Embedded Standard (WES)-based thin clients. These solutions further expand HP's Thin Client and Client Virtualization solutions portfolio.

Integrating Microsoft RemoteFX, a new feature being developed for Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1, enables future WES-based HP thin clients to deliver a richer, local-like user experience for Microsoft session-based desktop and virtual desktop infrastructure customers. By leveraging the power of virtualized graphics and advanced codecs, remote workers will be able to access any type of application or screen content, including rich media and 3D applications.
"HP's technology leadership and innovative thin client and infrastructure hardware and services portfolio, paired with Microsoft's new RemoteFX technology, creates exciting possibilities for expanding the market for client virtualization solutions with a new generation of simple, low-cost, interactive access devices," said Jeff Groudan, director, Thin Clients & Client Virtualization, Desktop Solutions Organization, HP. "These recent announcements from Microsoft should further validate that client virtualization is a mature set of technologies that can help maximize IT and financial resources for businesses today."
In addition to support for Microsoft RemoteFX, the HP RDC 7 add-on for HP WES-based thin clients will enhance the end user experience and decrease demand for IT resources by easing bandwidth consumption. Today, HP ships more Windows-based thin clients than the next three competitors combined, and the new HP RDC 7 add-on will allow for an even better experience with advanced features like true multi-monitor support, bi-direction audio, more efficient management of multiple applications and improved video quality with Windows Media Player redirection.
"Microsoft's long-standing partnership with HP on desktop virtualization means customers will receive a complete, robust and flexible computing experience," said Mike Schutz, director of product management at Microsoft Corp. "The Microsoft RemoteFX feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 service pack 1 paired with HP thin client and server technologies will allow more client virtualization customers to enrich their computing environments by accessing any type of application or screen content, including rich media and 3D applications."
With more than 20 years engineering alliance with Microsoft and the industry's most complete, desktop-to-datacenter client virtualization portfolio, HP has both the technical and practical experience to help customers experience the full potential of client virtualization solutions. Only HP can architect and deliver simple, affordable end-to-end solutions, customized to meet the specific technology and user needs of Microsoft customers.
HP's support of these Microsoft client virtualization technologies bolster its ongoing commitment to offering the latest client virtualization software to its customers, and will extend the company's leading portfolio of client virtualization software offerings from Microsoft, Citrix and VMware. Closely integrated with these virtualization software leaders, HP is simplifying client virtualization by guiding customers through size and implementation to optimize acquisition costs, enhancing the user experience and reduce the risk and complexity to deploy client virtualization solutions.
Pricing and availability
HP RDC 7 will be available via download at no additional charge on all HP thin clients with Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard, by the end of March 2010.
