There's this really funny actor named Dax Shepard, who was one of the stars of the straight-to-DVD cult classic movie, Idiocracy. Dax is also a big hit at SXSW and other cool places in the world. So when I heard he was being integrated into Cloud Computing, I thought, hey, that's a really cool idea.

Then I put my glasses back on and saw that the subject at hand is DaaS in the Cloud, not Dax. Oh well.

Specifically, Cameron Purdy, VP of Development at Oralce, will be presenting a session at Cloud Expo called "DaaS Cloud: Lining Your Cloud with Data." Data in the cloud is the essential element, of course; data is what most users want to think of as "the computer" these days, not the box, and not the application. The philosophical underpinnings goes back to when we first started talking about web services a decade ago; users need their data, and don't really care about how IT delivers it, as long as they deliver it effectively.

Let's let Cameron explain it: "Organizations embracing Cloud Computing are quickly realizing how Data Grid technology can solve many of the challenges associated from running applications on distributed shared infrastructure across the globe," he explained in his session abstract.

This session will map the evolution of Data Grid technology and how it is being successfully integrated into Cloud Computing."

Many show attendees will remember Cameron from his days at Tangosol,  of which he was President and Co-Founder before Oracle acquired it in 2007. Tangosol's  focus was enterprise Java component development software, and it fit into Oracle's grid vision. Cameron remains an active member of the software community, is a contributor to the Java and XML specifications, and is co-author of a component-based development patent with Tangosol co-founder Dr. Gene Gleyzer.
