Google Pairs up with VMware Touting Cloud Portability

Google’s new Apps engine for business hopes to attract enterprises with VMware collaboration

VMware and Google are aligning with each other to make it easier for applications deployment and to allow interoperability between their respective platforms. Much of the collaboration seems to be centered around VMware's Springsource division that develops and supports Java based enterprise middleware. Specifically Java developers can use the Eclipse based SpringSource Tool Suite to deploy Spring Java apps in their private VMware vSphere environment, in VMware vCloud partner clouds, or choose to directly port them to the Google App Engine with no changes to their code. They will be able to mix and match Google and VMware performance tools on apps for public, private and hybrid cloud environments. Further the companies are integrating Spring Roo, VMware's application development tool and the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) targeted at browser apps. Another project on the works is to link VMware's Spring Insight  performance tracing technology within the SpringSource tc Server application server with Google's Speed Tracer technology for testing apps on cloud.

At its Google IO Developer Conference last week, the internet giant made it clear that it has its mind set on taking its Google Apps platform to business customers and make that giant leap from consumers to enterprises. That's where it unveiled its new business oriented Apps Engine on a pay-as-you-go business model that lets developers build apps using programming languages on its cloud based development platform. The Business edition comes with enhanced apps management features and SQL support. Though the two companies, VMware and Google make strange bedfellows coming as they are from different sides of the technology spectrum, Google certainly stands to be taken more seriously in the enterprise cloud market with seasoned VMware by its side. Moreover with a multitude of cloud platforms cropping up, interoperability and collaboration become a critical point of consideration for apps developers when targeting a wider market for their wares in a cost effective manner.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by ...
