Three Reasons Virtualization Is Growing at a Steady Pace

Organizations are recognizing the immediate and significant benefits to virtualization

virtualizationAccording to a study released recently, nearly two thirds of all servers installed in 2010 were virtualized servers. Organizations are recognizing the immediate and significant benefits to virtualization, and virtualization management tools are making the technology more accessible to all sorts of organizations. It’s estimated that, within just two years, as many as 80 percent of all new servers will be virtualized. As time goes on, the number of legacy servers that aren’t virtualized will decrease more and more, leaving only a very few specialized types of applications running on dedicated hardware.

There are, at least, a couple of contributing factors that are spurring this rapid growth in virtualization. The technology is maturing, for one, giving the same kinds of tools and management options that previously were afforded only to physical servers. This makes IT much more comfortable with the technology. Perhaps more than that, however, is the way that the economy is impacting organizations. IT needs to cut back, and virtualization lets them get more bang for their server buck.

There are at least three significant benefits of virtualization that are driving this trend. Specifically, virtualization provides:

  1. Significant cost savings. Virtualization lets you increase utilization of your server hardware, unlocking resources that would otherwise be sitting dormant. Today’s virtualization management tools have capacity and provisioning down to a science, meaning you can make sure you’re getting the most from your physical servers. Fewer physical servers means less capital costs, but also fewer operational costs in terms of power, cooling, and system administration.
  2. Agility. Virtualization lets IT respond to business needs faster and more fully. When a business unit requires a new application, you don’t have to order a new physical server and wait for implementation. You can be up and running in a matter of minutes.
  3. Improved service levels. The robust management tools that allow for high utilization also allow you to more fully guarantee service levels. Adding capacity becomes a relatively easy process, and in many cases can be done on a fully-automated basis, without needing to wait for systems admins to come in and make a new capacity plan.
