Here’s the top cyber news and stories of the day.
- Big Data in Demand for Intelligence Community - The National Security Agency (NSA) is poised to deliver an initial cloud computing capability for the entire intelligence community (IC) that will significantly enhance cybersecurity and mission performance, and unleash the power of innovation for intelligence agencies, Lonny Anderson, NSA chief information officer, says. There is no better use case for the IC, than big data, and it’s good to see how deeply they are warming to it. Via AFCEA Signal, more here.
- Library of Congress has archived 170 billion tweets … and counting - While this isn’t quite news, it’s pretty interesting. Twitter and the LofC are working together to archive ever public tweet (even the deleted ones!). One day it will be interesting to see some cool big data analytics over 20 years of old tweets. - Cybersecurity issues remain unresolved at Commerce agencies, say auditors - In a Dec. 28 letter (.pdf) to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, auditors include OIG recommendations related to cybersecurity as one of five groups of unimplemented changes constituting short-term priorities within the department. These weaknesses were found in the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the International Trade Administration, the Patent and Trademark Office, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Census Bureau. - US Army, Air Force, DISA Enter New Agreement with Microsoft - In a fairly controversial move to modernize technology infrastructure and reduce costs, the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) are entering into a new agreement for Joint Enterprise Licensing. This agreement will allow all three organizations a single point of access to the latest Microsoft technology centered around collaboration, cybersecurity, mobility, cloud computing and big data. It is interesting that these government agencies chose Microsoft over other IT datacenter companies such as Google for this exclusive partnership. Via LegitReviews, more here.
