Level 3 Network Enables NATO-Russia Council to Monitor Airspace Safety of Commercial Flights

- NATO Communications and Information Agency Selects Level 3 to Provide Network Connectivity between Airspace Monitoring Facilities

LONDON, Jan. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Level 3 Communications B.V., an affiliate of Level 3 Communications, Inc., (NYSE: LVLT) today announced that the company has signed a contract with the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) to install and maintain an IP Virtual Private Network (VPN) to be used by the NATO-Russia Council Cooperative Airspace Initiative (NRC CAI).

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20111004/LA77008LOGO)

The joint NATO-Russia CAI system was completed in 2009 and the CAI's testing period began to see how well the system worked sharing air traffic information. In December 2011, NRC Foreign Ministers declared the system operational and in 2013, the NRC will have a 24/7 capability to monitor air traffic. More information on CAI and the NRC is available at www.nato-russia-council.info.

The aim of this initiative is to enhance airspace transparency between NATO and Russia, identify any suspicious aircraft activities, and provide early warnings through the monitoring of NATO-Russian airspace. As part of this project, the Level 3 network will connect a range of NATO monitoring facilities and enable real-time display and observation of commercial airspace activities.

"The Level 3 network will connect the NATO CAI units and hence support the improvement of air safety for the thousands of passengers using international flights between NATO and Russian airspace each day, and the millions of inhabitants on the ground," said Dr Rene van der Heiden, Programme Manager and leader of the NRC CAI Operations and Enhancement Support Team.

"The Level 3 network and our IP VPN services are designed for performance, security and productivity, and we are pleased to be selected by NATO to provide IP VPN-based infrastructure between the key locations of the CAI network," said James Heard, Level 3 regional president of EMEA.. "With our services, NATO will be able to exchange air traffic information and direct voice coordination with the security and reliability they need."

One of the biggest challenges when developing connected devices is identifying user value and delivering it through successful user experiences. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Mike Kuniavsky, Principal Scientist, Innovation Services at PARC, described an IoT-specific approach to user experience design that combines approaches from interaction design, industrial design and service design to create experiences that go beyond simple connected gadgets to create lasting, multi-device experiences grounded in people's real needs and desires.
The true value of the Internet of Things (IoT) lies not just in the data, but through the services that protect the data, perform the analysis and present findings in a usable way. With many IoT elements rooted in traditional IT components, Big Data and IoT isn’t just a play for enterprise. In fact, the IoT presents SMBs with the prospect of launching entirely new activities and exploring innovative areas. CompTIA research identifies several areas where IoT is expected to have the greatest impact.
Can call centers hang up the phones for good? Intuitive Solutions did. WebRTC enabled this contact center provider to eliminate antiquated telephony and desktop phone infrastructure with a pure web-based solution, allowing them to expand beyond brick-and-mortar confines to a home-based agent model. It also ensured scalability and better service for customers, including MUY! Companies, one of the country's largest franchise restaurant companies with 232 Pizza Hut locations. This is one example of WebRTC adoption today, but the potential is limitless when powered by IoT.
The Internet of Things will greatly expand the opportunities for data collection and new business models driven off of that data. In her session at @ThingsExpo, Esmeralda Swartz, CMO of MetraTech, discussed how for this to be effective you not only need to have infrastructure and operational models capable of utilizing this new phenomenon, but increasingly service providers will need to convince a skeptical public to participate. Get ready to show them the money!
