In China, cellular M2M subscriptions are expected to overtake the US to become the largest cellular M2M market in 2013, with volumes increasing by over 40% to reach just over 45 million and grow to 138 million in 2017. The Chinese government strongly supports the development of M2M, highlighting it as a key area in its 2011-2015 development plan. It wants to drive energy efficiency and support the potential services for its huge population, such as transportation and healthcare, as well as the domestic industry's development to become a global leader in areas such as module manufacturing, device design, software development, cloud services and network services.
A new report from Pyramid Research, "Cellular M2M Connections: An Analysis of Growth Drivers, Market Segments and Operator Approaches" looks at the developments in the cellular M2M market, providing in-depth country, regional and application-level forecasts underpinned by an in-depth analysis of some of the key drivers and challenges that the market faces: This is of particular importance given the variance in forecasts available.
Meanwhile, LTE mobile data in Saudi Arabia are expected to grow from $3.3 billion to $5.3 billion in 2017, according to "Saudi Arabia: LTE and Fiber Rollouts Boost Operators and Vendors", a Pyramid Research report. The entry of LTE service in the Saudi market demonstrates that operators anticipate a continued data demand crush. Operators, particularly STC and Mobily, are prioritizing LTE, as well as FTTH network rollouts and exploring options for bolstering data-carrying capacity. Operators will need to leverage LTE to their benefit and help customers understand the technology's capabilities in order to drive adoption.
This report provides a precise profile of the country's telecommunications, media and technology sectors based on proprietary data from Pyramid's research in the market. It provides a detailed competitive analysis of both the fixed and mobile sectors, tracks the market shares of technologies and services and monitors the introduction and spread of new technologies.

In Germany, expansion of high-speed broadband deployment and growth in smartphone uptake is offering German operators an opportunity to consider expanding their service portfolio to IT solutions.
Currently three mobile operators offer commercial LTE services, focusing their investment on expanding the coverage across the country. In 2011, LTE uptake lagged due to the regulatory obligation of LTE coverage in so-called white spot areas, and a lack of tablet and smartphone devices. As of now, operators do not plan to add a prepaid option for LTE, and this is expected to inhibit LTE growth in the short term. However, with operators expanding their LTEenabled device portfolio, and services reaching urban areas, Pyramid expects LTE adoption to accelerate next year to reach 3 percent of all SIMs (3.6 million), rising further to 19 percent (26.5 million) by 2017, she notes.
The report, "Germany: Cable and LTE Stimulate Mobile Data Growth" provides a detailed competitive analysis of both the fixed and mobile sectors, tracks the market shares of technologies and services and monitors the introduction and spread of new technologies.
