VMware announced its plans to create a hybrid cloud service offering which will compete with Amazon Web Services in the enterprise cloud space, according to this TechCrunch article. The product, VMware vCloud Hybrid Service, is expected to launch later this year.

RoboEarth announced the launch of Rapyuta, a cloud computing platform which is designed to help robots complete complex tasks, according to this IEEE Spectrum article. You can watch a video of how the platform will assist robots on YouTube.

Amazon announced that new AWS EC2 customers will gain access to a virtual private cloud platform (EC2-VPC) free of charge, according to this ZDNet article.

A recent Saugatuck report revealed that the costs of running workloads in a public cloud may be more expensive than running them on-premise for enterprises that have a well-run IT environment, according to this ZDNet article. The authors said that to take full advantage of the cloud, enterprises need to understand which workloads are right for the cloud.

Cloud Security: Too Important to Leave to End Users

My jaw dropped as I was reading the findings of the just-released Security of Cloud Computing Users Study conducted by Ponemon Institute for CA Technologies. Only half the respondents evaluate the security of the software as a service (SaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offers they buy. Only half are confident in the security of those services. And only half take common sense precautions, including assessing whether the cloud makes it harder to protect confidential information, proactively assessing which information is too sensitive for the cloud, and auditing or assessing cloud-computing resources before deployment.
