Apple has fallen out of the top five smartphone pack in the APEJ (Asia Pacific Excluding Japan) region as a result of the momentum of Chinese vendors, a move IDC suggests could see it lose out on a market that will almost double shipments by 2017.  Read Original Content

Sina, China’s equivalent to Twitter, has jumped on the mobile messaging bandwagon after it began promoting its new app WeMeet, known as Weimi in Chinese. Weibo has over 500 million registered users, more than 50 million of which are active each day, but it is under pressure from WeChat, the mobile messaging app developed by Chinese Internet giant Tencent, which has 235 million monthly active users across China and overseas. Hong Kong leads Asia in mobile Internet usage, with 96 percent of smartphone users using mobile Internet service on a daily basis, followed by Japan (94 percent), Singapore (93 percent), and South Korea (92 percent), said Google on Wednesday when releasing results of a survey. According to a report by Canalys, India is becoming the third largest smartphone market with nine million shipments during the April-June quarter, while 238.1 million smartphone units were shipped worldwide during the same period hitting a growth rate of 129 percent.  Read Original Content
Yahoo Japan Corp., armed with $4 billion in cash, is putting the nation’s smartphone advertising and online shopping companies on alert as it searches for growth at home. In the past five years, its sales growth was a third of the average among peers, according to data compiled by Bloomberg, as the operator of Japan’s most-visited Web portal failed to extend its dominance to smartphone services. The value proposition of the extra large smartphones, also called the phablet, seems to have caught the fancy of the Indian consumer. Microsoft's Office Mobile for Android phones has finally reached Asia in key markets such as India and Singapore, nearly a month after its U.S. launch.
