Gamification and Business Software – Introducing RedCritter

The evolution of business software, specifically SaaS, continues to spark new, innovative, and powerful tools for business owners to optimize how their employees use, and gain from, the systems that are in place.

One company that is making waves in the business software gamification space is RedCritter, a Texas-based software company that has already integrated with several big hitters in the SaaS space, notably Zendesk and Salesforce, to enable its clients to track, monitor, apply rewards and badges, and actively monitor the successes, and failures, of its users (based on custom defined and created goals).

We had the pleasure of speaking recently with Dan Hoffman, the Director of Business Development at RedCritter, to ask him some questions about RC, gamification, and how it can change the way we use, and take advantage, of business software. Read on for the full interview!

Tell us about RedCritter. What’s the pitch?

RedCritter is an employee engagement SaaS that easily layers across your business systems: enabling cross-system performance management with powerful game mechanics to drive employee engagement and productivity.

Business development is tricky. What’s your approach – do you test ideas, or are you executing a plan brainstormed years ago?

Our plan as a technology focused company is to provide a simple, robust, and easy to implement solution to a market that is demanding more engaging business systems.  The value of gamification has been demonstrated over the last several years but the most successful deployments share two commonalities: the best technology and a well thought out implementation strategy.

That’s why our approach is to partner with highly regarded software consultancies that understand the importance of quality design; and to provide them with the best technology on the market.

Some write gamification off as a fad. What’s your response? How central to a business can gamification be?

The most important thing any organization can do to enhance employee productivity is provide regular feedback, yet so many organizations struggle in this area.  We provide a way to easily recognize employee performance in real-time and in a manner that directly ties back to their work.

The term “gamification” can be a loaded term because it conjures a connotation of being frivolous. However, the fact is every leading company uses productivity and engagement techniques, they just might not call it “gamification”.  What we are actually providing is a better method for employee recognition and we are doing so in a way that employees find engaging and management can readily implement.

How can users of say Zendesk benefit from RedCritter? Give us a common use-case for customer service.

The call center environment is unique in the business world.  Agents quickly become disenchanted when they believe their good work goes unnoticed, and managers have a very difficult task tracking performance levels of their team/agents. The difficulty in providing accurate feedback frequently results in poor customer service and high rates of attrition.

With RedCritter, you can provide instant feedback for top performers (e.g., recognizing the agent who closed the most tickets last quarter, last week, last hour etc.) while simultaneously using our Skill Tracking feature to have a dynamic view of where your agents excel and where they may need additional training.

What’s the future of gamification? Where do we go from here?

Gamification is becoming a cornerstone of every organization’s approach to employee engagement.  There are many motivations that appeal to different personality types: money, power, recognition, etc. It is becoming increasingly important that your engagement strategy is not limited to one tactic but rather that you utilize a number of different strategies to engage your entire team.

Is this something only web-based companies are interested in, or do you see gamification in non-web companies areas too?

We see mostly forward-thinking companies leveraging gamification solutions.  Of course, that’s true of every new technology.  In practice, our solution has valuable application for any company that would like to increase employee engagement and productivity.

WebRTC has had a real tough three or four years, and so have those working with it. Only a few short years ago, the development world were excited about WebRTC and proclaiming how awesome it was. You might have played with the technology a couple of years ago, only to find the extra infrastructure requirements were painful to implement and poorly documented.
