When Transaction Management Becomes a Business (Technical) Issue [#APM]

Businesses need to integrate ‘operational performance metrics’

Transaction management is not just for technical geeks; it is very much a subject that ‘business suits' should be focused on.

But should it be seen as a business issue for technologists or a technology issue for business people?

Or doesn't it matter and should transaction management be a two-way street anyway?

Sometimes called business transaction management or business transaction monitoring (both conveniently sitting under a BTM acronym), this is the activity of application transaction profiling and also what we also sometimes refer to as ‘user-defined' transaction profiling.

For want of a formal definition:

BTM has been described as that process aimed at detecting and resolving problems at the granular level of interactions between IT elements that form a business transaction (for example, an online stock trade or even a travel booking).

BTM & mobile App Performance Management (mAPM)
A close relative of BTM is mobile App Performance Management (mAPM) - or drop the mobile element if you must, but in 2014 we will probably keep it. Crittercism has recently released a transaction management solution optimized for mobile and connected apps designed to define, monitor and manage real-time mobile transactions.

The company says that in order to create optimal user experiences (and drive mobile revenues), businesses need to integrate what it calls out as ‘operational performance metrics' such as:

  • Application response time
  • Errors
  • System crashes

.. and these need to be integrated with business data such as:

  • Monetary value,
  • Success rate
  • User flow of their revenue-critical transactions

Benefits of Crittercism's mobile optimized transaction management solution include proactive visibility into the business and revenue impact of key mobile transaction performance; an ability to define and monitor true mobile transactions that span across multiple views, user interactions and service calls; and an ability to automatically track all mobile-specific dynamic states such as network connectivity changes, application backgrounding/foregrounding and user view transitions that provide complete user flow visibility.

NOTE: Xamarin defines background processing or backgrounding as the process of letting applications perform tasks in the background while another application is running in the foreground.

Crittercism also points to its product's ability to create "actionable insights" with operational and business metrics to prioritize, troubleshoot and optimize the customer experience of revenue-critical mobile transactions.

HP TransactionVision
HP also plays a strong hand in this space with its own HP TransactionVision software.

This product aims to provide transaction management and tracking that spans complex distributed and mainframe environments. It provides transaction management that enables users to track and confirm the path and passage of data flow down to "step-by-step timing of each transaction" - and the content or payload of each.

With HP TransactionVision, you can track a single transaction across complex application environments into the mainframe, gain visibility and control - and understand the impact of critical transactions on business outcomes so you can properly support the larger organization.

For HP, transaction management is all about the automatic correlation of application events with business transactions.

This in some ways answers our original question - transaction management is a technical and business issue at the same time and this tier of more granular log-level technology will now be of more importance.
