2016 DevOps - Focus point

DevOps will play a major role in 2016 simply because DevOps is all about savings, which is fundamentally different from the traditionally IT budgeted projects; without DevOps the dollars are anyway drained for nothing because the teams are working in silos which leads to the delay due to inter dependency, poor code quality, too much of un-warranted hand overs, post deployment issues, inconsistent environment, non-availability of infra structural resources etc as per Forrester research 60% of application failure & downtime are related to releases despite 75% of IT operation time spent on release management.

DevOps is a buzzword in 2015 and currently it’s a wait and watch situation but already few companies embraced the changes early and brought down the overall SDLC cost by 30% and defects by 35% and improved the time to market by 22%. These are proven facts so it will be more of compulsion to be a fast follower to stay ahead of competition. DevOps is a culture; it’s a way of life in an IT organization. It’s no more a pure technology play, so business’s started questioning the efficiency and productivity of IT in terms of its agility in meeting their ever changing needs and aggressive time line.

Matured companies started embracing DevOps because it saves tons of $ without cutting down the job. DevOps is all about collaboration and elimination of waste due to the inefficiency in the process. DevOps is not simply about the Dev and Ops, this brings the collective responsibility with the common goal in a collaborative environment. These aspects attributes to individual productivity improvement and giving back few evening hours and worry less weekends to have quality time with the family.

So far CI / CD are being managed by few scripts writing hero’s using some open source tools but the latest zero touch release automation tools radically changed that technology landscape by improving the total number of release from 10 to 4000 in a month by eliminating the human intervention.  Script writers are important for automation so they rebadge themselves to take larger responsibility in terms of meeting organizational goals by implementing DevOps at an enterprise level.

CXOs believe DevOps is the way to bring radical change in an organization and move the needle in terms of cost, quality and time to market. Businesses and sponsors started realizing the power of high end licensed tools and technology; the ROI realization is exponential and the break-even in just few quarters.

So to summarize DevOps saves the cost and CXO, IT, Business and technical resources on the ground started embracing this positive change, so in my opinion nothing stops from being the primary focus in 2016
