From scaling Agile to creating a DevOps culture, there was plenty to take in as the software innovation community continues to band together to push industries forward. In fact, we are seeing the rise of FinTech and FinServ in this week's posts - a vertical market that has been gaining a larger share of DevOps and IT news coverage in recent months. Read on to learn how software continues to impact the financial world and more on IoT, the Cloud and Continuous Delivery.

As always, stay tuned to all the news coming from @ElectricCloud on DevOps andContinuous Delivery throughout the week and retweet/favorite to get your favorite pieces featured in our weekly recap!

1. Continuous Delivery: When Business is IT

By @SachaLabourey | Published on @TechBeaconCom

Businesses and IT are bound to become more interwoven as software plays an increasingly important role in differentiating products and services. Companies that successfully integrate business and IT will be rewarded with a competitive advantage. Yet "Business is IT" is easier said than done. What does it really mean? Continuous delivery (CD) is an approach that aims to answer that question by defining principles to guide how business and IT should work together.

2. Hybrid Clouds are Hot, SDNs and DevOps Coming on Strong

By @ClintBoulton | Published on @CIOonline

If you're a CIO the chances are good your computing environment looks something like this: A hybrid cloud comprising core business software hosted internally but interfacing with software-as-a-service applications that are important but not mission-critical. And you also have public cloud services where you test applications.

3. CIOs Must Drive Technology Change For Business: IDC Study

Change or die. That is the message that is finally getting through to large corporate CIOs. And the biggest change is turning the CIO into a strategic asset in the C-suite. This CIO goes beyond IT break-fix. This executive now must find ways to use technology to make money for the business. That is the basic finding of an IDC study released this month, titled "The Changing Role of IT Leadership: CIO Perspectives for 2016." Approximately 150 CIOs and another 300 respondents in line of business (LOB) technology purchasing roles participated in the study.

4. Survey: DevOps Helps Agencies Better Manage App Life Cycles

By Derek Major| Published on @GCNtech

IT managers that are using DevOps are seeing results, with 74 percent reporting reduced cost and risk of project failure, 76 percent reporting faster app delivery and 84 percent reporting improved efficiency. Despite these results there are still some struggles for federal agencies regarding security, IT budget restraints and lack of the agile infrastructure DevOp requires.

5. Can Agile Scale and Does it Matter?

By @mheusser | Published on @CIOonline

Five years ago, when I visited Zappos, CEO Tony Hseih pointed out that as organizations grow they become less effective. Each person you add increases productivity by a little less than the previous employee. Eventually, a large organization takes man-years to do what a small one could do in man-weeks. We understand this intuitively. Hseih claimed this was universal to nearly all business - yet it didn't have to be. He used the example of cities, where more people condensed in a small area actually improves quality of life by creating new small businesses, cultural and social events, things to do and so on. Living with enough people in a small enough area and you will have access to an incredible variety of resources, products and services. Hseih wanted to bring that idea to business. The idea was so radical that employees had to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

6. Three Tips to Avoid Painting Your DevOps into a Scalability Corner

By @GetTechSpective | Published on @devopsdotcom
http://devops.com/2016/01/19/3-tips-avoid-painting-devops-scalability-corner/

When everything is firing on all cylinders, DevOps can be awesome. Teams work together seamlessly. Routine tasks are automated. Continuous delivery is continuously integrated, continuously tested, continuously deployed and continuously monitored. All is well, and right with the world-unless your DevOps needs begin exceeding the capacity of the platforms and tools you depend on. Scalability is a crucial element of DevOps success.

7. What's in Store for FinTech in 2016?

By @Pgelis | Published on @ITProPortal

As we settle into 2016, there is no doubt that we can expect to see FinTech continue on its prosperous path. We saw some FinTech companies valued at $1 billion, earning the title of a unicorn company. Various FinTech influencer lists also emerged, and of course, investment in FinTech soared to new highs.

8. Culture Over Technology: The Key to DevOps success

By David Auslander | Published by @cloud_comp_news

Don't take this the wrong way. As anyone who has been reading my articles can tell, I am all about the technology that enables DevOps but sometimes the greatest change in the enterprise comes from non-technical places. To many of you reading this statement, that might be a radical concept - but when it comes to overarching changes such as implementing a DevOps program, culture is much more important than what code repository to use. DevOps in particular not only relies on changes in the technical environment, even more so in how people work together, interact and develop.

9. How to Break Through 5 Choke Points in Your Continuous Delivery Pipeline

The state of testing survey aims to provide insights on a number of aspects of the testing profession. Reviewing things like the adoption of test techniques and practices, test automation, and many of the other challenges that testers are facing today. The survey, made by testers for testers, is organized by Joel Montvelisky from PractiTest together with Lalit Bhamare from Tea-Time with Testers. 2016 will be the third time that this survey is done.

10. IoT Software Delivery

Developing software for the Internet of Things (IoT) comes with its own set of challenges. Security, privacy, and unified standards are a few key issues. In addition, each IoT product is comprised of (at least) three separate application components: the software embedded in the device, the backend service, and the mobile application for the end user's controls. Each component is developed by a different team, using different technologies and practices, and deployed to a different stack/target - this makes the integration of these separate pipelines and the coordination of software updates for IoT more problematic. How do you coordinate the diverse moving parts that must come together when developing your IoT product or updating each of its components?

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
