Intel is going to have to wrestle ARM for the mobile market.

ARM, whose chips are the most widely used in cell phones, has gathered MontaVista, Samsung, TI, Marvell, Mozilla and Movial together to build a Linux reference platform for next-generation mobile apps that they'll offer free to developers.

The idea is to improve existing open source projects focused on the Internet experience and use technologies like Gnome Mobile and the Mozilla browser for the application framework.

It's also supposed to overcome the hazards of the tweaks made to ARM's chip designs and standardize things to work on multiple gismos, a problem Intel doesn't have.

The applications are expected towards the end of next year, the beginning of '09.

Movial is apparently kicking in an application called IXS, short for Internet Experience Suite, for custom-branded user interfaces for Linux-based connected devices.
