Wireless Worm "Has No Teeth," Say Mobile Security Experts

  • Cabir Virus Attempts to Jump from Phone to Phone Using Bluetooth

Owners of Nokia 6600 and 3650 phones, as well as other Series 60 handsets produced by Nokia, Siemens, and others, have not been majorly inconvenienced by the world's first wireless worm - despite the best efforts of "Vallez," a member of the "29a" group of so-called proof-of concept virus writers
  • As we reported here already yesterday, the world's security experts seem completely agreed: the wireless worm has no teeth.

McAfree reports that Cabir seeks to transmit itself to any other Bluetooth-equipped Symbian device within range, and that the resulting worm activity "seriously reduces battery life."

An alert from Symantec says "This worm repeatedly sends itself to the first Bluetooth-enabled device that it can find, regardless of the type of device. For example, even a Bluetooth-enabled printer will be attacked if it is within range."

Both McAfee and Symantec, and also the Finnish site F-Secure, classify the worm as "low risk," mainly because accepting the 3 secret files that comprise the virus into the receiving handset requires the user to press a button.
