WLANs Get More Secure as 802.11i Adds Encryption to 802.11

On Thursday, the IEEE subcommittee dealing with 802.11i standard signed off on it, so in future LANs using 802.11 will benefit from the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) protocol, which is what 802.11i adds.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has designated AES as the security standard for wireless networks that carry government information.

The Wi-Fi Alliance reports that it plans to certify products for 802.11i security standards starting September, 2004.
