Coraid's EtherDrive Storage Blades Chosen By Film Studio

The Independent Film Maker Has Deployed 28TB Of Storage Using EtherDrive

The makers of Hoodwinked, a modern version of Little Red Riding Hood, have been using Coraid's EtherDrive Storage Blades in a Storage Area Network or the past 4 months. The independent film maker has deployed 28TB of storage using EtherDrive to store its clever and funny version of the classic tale.

"I read about Coraid's product while searching the web for different storage options," says Glenn Neufeld, supervisor for the independent studio. "What drew me to the EtherDrive was the virtually limitless amount of storage it provides as well as its reasonable price point. The amount of storage required for an animated project is enormous. With 20 animators, 20 modelers, and 20 lighting-compositors, each contributing portions which add up to nearly 90 minutes of 3D animation, there is a need for serious storage.  We purchased Coraid EtherDrive blades and mounted our own disk drives and now have 12.5 Terabytes of storage easily expandable at any time to 28T using off the shelf hard drives!  EtherDrive allowed us to minimize our costs by helping us understand that essentially, all we needed was more disks, not more servers.  That's what EtherDrive does; it attaches more disks to the servers we already have via the Ethernet, which makes it simple.  Even when you factor in the cost of a few extra Ethernet switches, the savings to be had are formidable.  And, there is no need to master complex management software or learn another network technology like Fibre Channel.  The studio doesn't have the money or the time for complicated technology we just like to make movies."

"5 or 6 years ago it would have been impossible for an independent studio to produce an animated feature like Hoodwinked due to the outlandish cost of animation" almost a million dollars a minute using high resolution and full color depth in 3D.  Through advances in technology, today's software enables us to create theater quality animation with an "independent's" budget. Perhaps on a lesser scale but equally remarkable is how Coraid's innovative products have allowed us to stretch our storage budget in ways we never imagined. If we had utilized any of the other storage options available today with as many Terabytes of storage as Hoodwinked required, we would have compromised our production budget."

"It's been exciting to work with the makers of Hoodwinked," says Jim Kemp, CEO of Coraid. "They are another customer that has quickly put EtherDrive to work on their network in a way that they designed, and found out how simple it is to have a scaleable shared storage system without high cost. It has been a pleasure to work with Glenn and the Directors of Hoodwinked, Cory and Todd Edwards.  They have given us a taste of Hollywood on the animation side and opened our eyes to a new and exciting market place."

Coraid's EtherDrive Storage Blades provide a low cost networked storage solution using Ethernet connections between the server and a shared storage array (pool).  Multiple servers can access a common disk storage system eliminating wasted captive storage.  With EtherDrive, the storage pool can be expanded easily with simple Ethernet connections. Storage array performance is limited only by the number of disks configured for RAID striping and the speed of the Ethernet connection at the server.  And in those rare instances where an individual artist's machine might temporarily need a large amount of local storage, individual drives can be remote mounted over the network without moving them, freeing the technical staff from off-lining a machine to install hardware, and reducing artist downtime to almost zero.  Flexibility, expandability, and workforce continuity the hallmarks of Coraid's innovative solution to the mass storage needs of any company.

About Coraid

Coraid is focused on developing, manufacturing, marketing and supporting innovative solutions for networked storage. We believe in "the power of simplicity."  Our products make storage easier and more affordable for any server application. Coraid developed the Open Standards-based ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) protocol and uses AoE in its EtherDrive Storage Blade products.  This powerful and efficient protocol leverages the cost advantages of Ethernet to provide true networked storage.  For more information please contact Coraid at   877-548-7200 and visit our web site at www.coraid.com.

To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How? Overwhelmingly, even as enterprises have adopted cloud computing and are expanding to multi-cloud computing, IT leaders remain concerned about how to monitor, manage and control costs across hybrid and multi-cloud deployments. It’s clear that traditional IT monitoring and management approaches, designed after all for on-premises data centers, are falling short in ...

We are seeing a major migration of enterprises applications to the cloud. As cloud and business use of real time applications accelerate, legacy networks are no longer able to architecturally support cloud adoption and deliver the performance and security required by highly distributed enterprises. These outdated solutions have become more costly and complicated to implement, install, manage, and maintain.SD-WAN offers unlimited capabilities for accessing the benefits of the cloud and Internet. ...
