As network switch latencies fall and the architecture for processor coherency migrates from a frontside bus to a coherent network, technology is driving towards the next generation of distributed processing, which extends a microprocessor’s coherent interconnect onto a standard network, enabling efficient, high performance inter-processor communication for x86 systems over standard commodity switches. New MicroNetwork interconnect technologies are emerging, connecting Coherent HyperTransport over either Infiniband or Ethernet.
