Wyse and Citrix Team on Cutting-Edge Virtual Desktop Implementations

Customer Adoption Continues to Gain Momentum for 2009's Most Strategic Technology

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, today proudly released details of some of their more innovative virtual desktop implementations. Wyse is currently appearing at Citrix Summit in Orlando, Florida, at Booth #203 and within the Citrix Technology Exhibit Lab.

"Given the U.S. economic situation, we are seeing customers and prospects becoming more and more serious about streamlining their operations and maximizing every IT dollar," said Ricardo Antuna, VP of Products & Business Development at Wyse. "Desktop virtualization delivers all the benefits of a traditional PC deployment, only at a fraction of the TCO and with significant upside around energy savings."

Supporting such customer momentum is a recent report from Gartner that identified virtualization as the number one technology for 2009 in their annual report on "Top 10 Strategic Technologies" that will be strategic for most organizations. According to David Cearley, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, it's not only about classic server virtualization. Hosted virtual desktops are now capable of a "full 'thick client' image on a thin-client delivery model."

"In today's economy, IT organizations for enterprises and government are looking to reduce their overall TCO. Desktop and application virtualization technologies from Citrix deliver those benefits," said Sumit Dhawan, vice president of marketing, Citrix Systems. "Citrix XenApp and Citrix XenDesktop when used in combination with Wyse thin desktop appliance devices have proven to drastically simplify desktop computing and deliver significant TCO benefits."

Energy savings continues to drive virtual desktop adoption, in some cases due to political mandates. In the State of Louisiana, for example, Governor Bobby Jindal released executive order (EO BJ 2008-8) -- called "Green Government" -- designed to make state government more environmentally friendly.

"We recently made the decision to deploy the Wyse Viance along with Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp throughout our department," said Tim Hebert, IT Manager at Louisiana Department of Revenue. "We're looking forward to the possibility of extending the lifecycle of our desktop devices from today's range of 4 years to upwards of 9 or 10 years. I'm also excited about streamlining the support costs throughout our department. Most of all, the Louisiana Department of Revenue is committed to reducing its carbon emissions. We expect the energy savings associated with virtual desktops to reduce our desktop related energy consumption by nearly 75%. Wyse's proven track record had a lot to do with our decision; however, ultimately the decision was driven by the energy savings opportunities."

Like every business, hospitals and healthcare facilities are also looking at ways to cut energy and administration costs without sacrificing patient care. What they are finding is that the introduction of virtual desktops gives the hospital clinical staffs' better and more efficient computing resources, the IT department has fewer administrative issues, and the energy savings are extremely significant.

"Our doctors and nurses only have two hands; it's the I.T. department's job to see to it that they spend their time with patients and not lugging around costly and cumbersome PCs or laptops," said Lenny Goodman, Director - Desktop Management Group at Baptist Memorial Health Care in Memphis, TN. "We needed a solution that was designed from the patient bedside back to the data center, and not the other way around. A thin client deployment with Wyse S10s as the client and Citrix XenDesktop at the back end has been an ideal deployment for us. The Wyse units are self-configuring and are practically zero touch. As a result, our support costs are nearly non-existent. Our doctors and nurses now benefit from a user experience that has been significantly improved through reduced login times, a simplified user menu interface, and roaming session capabilities. In this day and age, it simply didn't make sense for us to keep managing PCs and laptops when we could host our applications at the data center and deploy them on Wyse thin clients. In addition, we anticipate approximately $500,000 in energy savings alone over the next five years. "

"We've been working alongside Wyse and Citrix on behalf of one of the largest publicly traded hospitals in the United States and are very excited about the prospects of bringing the benefits of virtual desktops to the clinical staff," said Robert Murray, Enterprise Architect at ProSys. "Wyse thin clients and Wyse Thin OS (WTOS) make endpoint computing a 'set it and forget it' proposition. With Wyse we can take the Citrix Dynamic Desktop Initiative to its fullest potential -- delivering inherent fast access, user switching, session roaming, and unquestioned security. All with near zero administrative overhead at the endpoint."

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...

To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How? Overwhelmingly, even as enterprises have adopted cloud computing and are expanding to multi-cloud computing, IT leaders remain concerned about how to monitor, manage and control costs across hybrid and multi-cloud deployments. It’s clear that traditional IT monitoring and management approaches, designed after all for on-premises data centers, are falling short in ...
