Cisco's David Bernstein to Present at Cloud Computing Conference in NYC

Bernstein to speak on Cloud Building and secrets from the vault cloud

David Bernstein, VP and General Manager of Network Applications Infrastructure for Cisco, will be presenting at SYS-CON's 2nd International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo in New York City this coming March 30-April 1, 2009.

Although there are a lot of "Cloud Consumers" out there, there aren't too many "Cloud Builders." On the one hand it requires a serious capital investment; on the other hand it is largely a black art. This applies to the Cloud "OS" as well as the physical platform. Approaching a Cloud as a large Cluster of regular servers with off the shelf interconnect will get you a wiring mess, partitioning which is hopelessly insecure, and crippling performance bottlenecks. This is because a cloud isn't just a server cluster - it's a cluster of virtual servers. So you need virtualization-aware components to build a cloud and you need to know how to connect and configure them. In this session, Bernstein won't provide wiring diagrams or switch configuration instructions, but will explain the challenges that Cloud Builders face from security, performance, and scalability perspectives. Bernstein will explain why Cloud Building is not like any other large datacenter or hosting project. The technologies of virtualization aware components including the virtualization aware data networking, storage networking, and also virtualization aware blade servers are brand new and a must to know about if you want to understand how the leaders are building clouds now. This session will be of interest to actual Cloud Builders as well as those curious about "the man behind the curtain."

Speaker Bio
David Bernstein is VP and General Manager of Network Applications Infrastructure for Cisco Systems, Inc, where he directs product and research efforts around application aware networking and distributed computing. He serves on several industry boards including the IEEE Computer Society Advanced Technology Executive Board.

Bernstein's team runs Cisco's internal Cloud Computing platform and so has first-hand experience in this emerging category. 25 years in software and systems in Silicon Valley in companies including Cisco, Siebel, and AT&T provide him with a deep perspective on applications infrastructure.

Cloud Computing Is Swelling Into an Estimated $36BN Market
