Unknown Hackers "Booby-Trap" MSN's Korean Web Site

The Attack's Aim Was to Steal Passwords from Visitors

In an attack directed at the news section of the MSN Korea Web site, hackers last week "booby-trapped" the South Korean site (www.msn.co.kr ) in an attempt to steal users' passwords.

Adam Sohn, an MSN director, confirmed that the site was taken offline for nearly half a day.

"Our preliminary opinion here was, this was the result of an unpatched operating system," Sohn said. "When stuff is in our data center, it's easier to control. We're pretty maniacal about getting servers patched and keeping our customers safe and protected."

It would seem that Microsoft intervened in time; no customers have reported problems stemming from visits to the Web site, Sohn said.

The 'booby-trap' exploit is a reminder to us all how dangerous it is to have the SAME password for different things. Once these bad guys get it, they'll trip through your lives if you do that.
