security solution for
protecting both virtual
and physical machines.
Enterprises are deploying
server virtualization to
realize benefits
associated with increased
operational flexibility,
improved utilization,
avoidance of unplanned
downtime and a reduced
carbon footprint. The
rush to virtualize has
caused many to overlook
security best-practices
common in a physical
environment. According to
Gartner, through 2009, 60
percent of virtual
machines used in
production will be less
secure than their
physical counterparts.
While the benefits of

If high-performance
server virtualization
means taking a physical
server and basically
chopping it up into lots
of little servers, what
do you call it when
multiple physical servers
are made into one virtual
machine? Well, you might
call it ScaleMP, an SMP
virtualization software
start-up that has spent
its infancy quietly
lashing together
off-the-shelf x86 servers
into 1.5 TFLOP systems
with 128 cores and a
terabyte of memory sold

third of all
organizations that have
implemented
virtualization do not
have a specific disaster
recovery strategy in
place to protect their
environments.

The Mono Web site has, in
some cases, been
downloading a very old
version of Mono. It
serves as a fine example
of what can go wrong with
software, even with the
best of intentions, and
without anyone really
making a mistake. What
happened was back in May
2005, the Mono team added
accessibility features to
its Web site, including
the little yellow pop-up
balloons for screen
readers.

3Leaf Systems announced
the Virtual Compute
Environment, a fully
virtualized data center
infrastructure that
allocates server
resources on demand to
support changing business
needs. By virtualizing
memory, CPU, and I/O
resources of standard x86
servers, 3Leaf Systems'
Virtual Compute
Environment (VCE)
delivers flexibility and
mainframe-class
availability to commodity
servers while optimizing
data center resources.
3Leaf Systems' VCE is a
core enabling technology
for the 'Dynamic Data
Center,' allowing
businesses to allocate
resources on demand to
meet business needs while
at the same time reducing
costs.
VMware deserves a lot of
credit. Even though
hardware virtualization
has been around for
decades in one form or
another, we wouldn't have
it in the x86 space
without VMware. The
hardware and OS vendors
would have been happy to
keep selling hardware
that was only 20%
utilized. VMware turned
this industry on its
head. But it has awoken
the slumbering giant that
is Microsoft...
Server virtualization
provides an immediate
reduction in hardware and
configuration cost. But
in focusing merely on the
hardware side of
virtualization, are we
leaving money on the
table? While
organizations can reduce
the number of boxes they
need, and save the cost
of replicating servers
for virtual test beds,
these servers are
becoming commodities.
In what is a big mistake,
in my opinion, Microsoft
has chosen to only
support Suse Linux in
Hyper-V. If they want to
truly compete with VMware
and other virtualization
companies they are going
to have to open this up.
This does not mean you
can not run other
distros, however it will
not be supported by
Microsoft. In today's
corporate world that is a
death nail for most
companies.
Quorum Technologies
