Steven Heller Angries Up The Blood
In catching up with various media after my vacation, I got around to listening to a Busin essWeek Innovation Podcast with graphic design luminary Steven Heller on The Business of Web Design. Given the podcast 217;s title, I w asn’ t at all ready for the conver sation that occurs, wherein Mr. Heller blathers a misguided, outdated, outmoded, and mostly [...]
Department of Civil D isobedienc e: Google Should Deliver Its YouTube Data to Viacom in Paper Form
The recent court order directing Google to hand over data to Viacom about every YouTube video ever watched strikes many people as an absurd overreach of the law into the privacy of anyone who has ever used YouTube (i.e., almost everyone on the Internet). Google should definitely keep fighting the ruling if it can. [...]
Federating identi.ca?
I note that a number of programmer s I respect are trying to launch instances of the software behind identi.ca. If they're su ccessful, and if there is a decent way to connect them into a federation (meaning we can com municate even if we're using different hosts), then we're getting somewhere. Is there some place where someone is monitoring the status? A wiki? A discussion thread? I'm not planning on running one until the trail has been well blazed, maybe not even then, but I don't mind helping t

Eating The IT Elephant - Book Review
Achieving Project success over the last 30 years has been difficult! Reports on various studies released over the last 5 years state as little as 30% of complex projects succeed. Although this number is climbing, very large projects (300 ? 500 man years) have been the least successful in succeed ing, with one report in 2007 [...]
Telephone
I have a telephone instrument on my desk. I rarely use it. Most of the calls I get are re cruiters, evil telem arketers, and wrong numbers. I mostly communicat e with people using email, im, and the old reliable f2f. The office phone is as useful to me as a typewriter , Lamson tube, or telegraph key.

Don't hide or disable menu items
A long time ago, it became fashionabl e, even re commended, to disable menu items when they could not be used. Don't do this. Users see the disabled menu item that they want to click on, and are left entirely without a clue of what they are supposed to do to get the menu item to work. Instead, leave the menu item enabled. If there's some reason you can't complete the action, the menu item can display a message telling the user why. Not loving your job? Visit the Joel on Software Job Board: Great s

WaveMaker Review
There are a number of tools out there which aspire to make building Rich Internet A pplication s easier. Some of them focus on server side logic, like Oracle. Others focus on a native runtime on the client like Adobe Flex and Microsoft. Still others focus on JavaScript on the client. This includes a lot of what Google does, and companies like WaveMaker. In this article, I take a look a WaveMaker and its vision for building a richer client exp erience.
And the special event is?..

DEBS08(1) - Active DB’s contribution: Snoop

CEP as applied to SOA
Although pundits might debate whether EDA (and thence CEP) is a part of the SOA paradigm (or not), there is no doubt that CEP can be used to make SOA services more useful [*1]. One such area is in managing SOA performance and SLAs (the SOA equivalent
Advanced, Event-Driven, Process Modeling
From OMG last week, it looked like the BPDM versus BPMN debate was “beginning to end” (although pundits are finding plenty to comment about: for example see EDS’ Fred Cummins’ comments, and Bruce Silver’s response) [*1].
High-performance event-driven executable UML?
