You better eat your . . . Frosted Flakes? Olympic legend Michael Phelps will appear on boxes of the Kellogg’s brand sugar cereal, drawing sharp criticism from health experts worried about the message he’ll be sending to children across America. “I would not consider Frosted Flakes the food of an Olympian,” said nutritionist [...]

Good morning everybody! This is Dave coming to you from Salt Lake City, UT. I'm on my Summer 2008 road trip. Started yesterday at 4AM, and got me into SLC at about 4PM. Stops include Laramie, WY; Boulder CO and on to Denver on Sunday for the Democratic National Convention. Then four days of watching, listening, talking, and thinking and then back on the road to do it all again! I tried to set up a LAN in my car, to no avail. There isn't much Sprint EVDO on the road between Reno and Salt Lake.

My colleague, Paul, got lots of… let’s call it, “feedback” regarding his post on the impending demise of the standalone Business Rule Engine (BRE) Market. It seems there are lots of folks out there who feel quite passionate about the subject, so I thought I would continue, albeit from a different angle and relate it back to the CEP and BusinessEvents for comparison. So… taking my cue from David Letterman and with a tip o’ the hat to Paul, here are the: Top
In this first post of many, I will be giving my personal opinion on the state of Web Services programming today. This post covers my thoughts on REST.
This could well be it. Of course, it may be fabricated, in which case, it’d be much less awfully funny, and funnily awful. [Tags: humor media ]
With no fanfare, or even mention on adobe's website, Adobe has officially released Flex Builder 3.01 and the Flex SDK 3.1.  Prior to the 3.01 release of flex builder, developers building AIR 1.1 applications had to go through a series of ext
I've been into computers since I was 4 years old. I went to an esteemed (so they tell me) computer science school, or at least that's what they tell me. I've worked for every kind of software shop: the Big 6 (now 4) consultancies, a couple of startups, and even 'the Big O' (yes, Oracle). So I thought I was familiar with most techniques, theories and approaches to software development. Well, it seems I missed one.About 8 weeks ago Deepak Alur, JackBe's ever-vigilant VP of Development, sent me

Yesterday was the final day of UX Week 2008, and our final speaker was Bruce Sterling. Though I’d heard of Bruce during the rise of cyberpunk, I was never all that aware of him until I attended South by Southwest Interactive in 1999. He was a legendary presence at the event, both providing the final thoughts to the attendees, and hosting a rocking party at his house. I had the fortune of Bruce speaking at another event of mine, IDEA 2006, where he did a remarkable job of summarizing the pr

Once again I thought this was one of the best TechWaves in years. Better than last years, which was good. Having my laptop crash on me when I’m scheduled to do four sessions wasn’t pleasant, and took the edge off of it for me. Otherwis
I received an email in my Inbox today to say that Twitter had killed off inbound SMS updates to the UK.The whole raison d’etre for my subscribing to and using Twitter was to get real-time updates. If I have to login to a Twitter app then what’s the point ? It’s no better, and actually worse than reading RSS. The guys at Twitter twitter on about it being costly, yada yada yada. Well they knew this when they started the service. The challenge for their exec team was to
Dion Hinchcliffe recently provide a comprehensive overview of the status of cloud computing for the enterprise in his post, Enterprise cloud computing gathers steam. It is a good article for spinning your knowledge up on what this trend means today. He starts with the comment, ???The days when organizations carefully cultivated vast data centers consisting of an endless sea of hardware and software are not over, at least not yet. However, the groundwork for their eventual transformation and dow

Today our puppy discovered the pink toy-bone that originally came with the third generation of the Sony Aibo robotic dog: Sadly, the Aibo was canceled by Soiny in March 2006, but Fenway, our puppy, took possession and repurposed the pink Aibo toy-bone as a new chew-toy. It should be noted that the pink bone didn't last long. It's been proved once again: nature rules over robotics...

Still problems with OpenJDK...
After fixing my trivial but severe error described in my previous post, other problems occurred with OpenJDK and blueMarine. One turned out to be a third party library (svgSalamander) using some com.sun.* classes - this has been fixed by replacing it.
OpenJDK is a very good thing - but you have to test for it
When one month ago it has been announced that OpenJDK had been freed by the last encumbrances, I said I was happy: it was really great news, an important milestone in the opensourcing of Java. A proof of the important...
Various updates from me (J2ME, JSON, travels - and blueMarine, of course)
Ok, you haven't read new posts here for some time now. I've been pretty busy: an important deadline first and later five consecutive days of holidays (!) chasing the Rhône river from the glacier to the mouth - my first...
Why didn't they use NASA World Wind for Java?
I've been just notified that the Italian Ministry for the Environment has just introduced a 3D viewer of italian cartography. The main features are: "fly over the terrain; fluid motion between two points; path tracking; popping up 2D maps related...
Blame Sun for that?
Warning, this is an entirely untechnical entry. Read only if you'd like to waste five minutes (was: Sun should invest more in ... advertising and public relationship).

Generics compiler bug?
I've been using generics for a few years, and I'm happy with them. I'm aware of the issues related to their design, and I agree that they could have been made a bit better (but I understand the trade-offs made...
